Third Party vs Comprehensive: which motor cover is right for you?

CIBL Guides · Motor · July 2026

Every driver in Trinidad & Tobago has to make this choice, and it's one of the questions we answer most often. Here's the difference in plain English — and how to decide which side of the line you belong on.

Third Party: the legal minimum

Under Trinidad & Tobago law, you cannot put a vehicle on the road without at least Third Party insurance. It covers other people — if you cause an accident, it pays for injury to others and damage to their vehicles or property.

What it does not do is pay for your own vehicle. If your car is damaged in an accident you caused, stolen, or destroyed by fire, Third Party pays you nothing. That's the trade-off for its lower premium.

Comprehensive: cover for your vehicle too

Comprehensive includes everything Third Party covers, and adds cover for your own vehicle — accident damage (regardless of fault), fire, and theft. Many policies can be extended further with benefits like windscreen cover, loss of use, or flood cover, which is worth discussing given how familiar flooding is in parts of T&T.

How to decide

The middle ground people forget

Some insurers offer Third Party, Fire & Theft — the legal minimum plus cover if your vehicle is stolen or burns. It can be a sensible compromise for a vehicle that's worth protecting against total loss but not worth full Comprehensive premiums.

Don't forget your No-Claim Discount

Every claim-free year earns you a No-Claim Discount (NCD) that can substantially reduce your premium. If you're switching insurers, proof of your NCD from your previous insurer carries your discount across — one of the documents on our document checklist.

The honest answer to "which is right for me?" is: it depends on your vehicle, your finances, and your driving life. That's exactly what a broker is for — we compare quotes across insurers for whichever cover fits, so you don't pay more than you need to for either option.
